An image needs its own basis for use. This page explains import licence checks and the limits of illustrations used alongside stories.
Selection and attribution
The import accepts identified CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC0 or public-domain images with required metadata and links. Images with unclear, fair-use or non-commercial terms are not used as those original photos. Ordinary cards and article pages show the creator, licence and image-page link.
Cropping and compact cards
Images adapt to different cards and may be cropped in their presentation; relevant credit notices identify cropped display. Large homepage tiles show only the image, category and title. Follow the article link to its credit and licence before reusing an image. A photographer is not necessarily associated with or endorsing the article.
Illustration is not evidence
An image may be a general illustration and need not depict the reported event. When an image is missing or fails to load, no empty image box is shown. Local development can display an API image directly as a preview; this does not grant a licence or create an R2 copy. Approved images are compressed and stored as WebP in R2. Do not infer a person’s involvement, location or time solely from a card image.
Concerns and onward use
A copyright licence does not necessarily settle privacy, image rights or trademarks. Report concerns with the article and image URLs, an explanation and any evidence. We can assess correction, replacement or removal from our display. You must check each image’s licence for your own use.
